Garret Wellesley, 7th Earl Cowley (born June 30, 1934 in Reno , Nevada , United States - † June 17, 2016 ) was a British peer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life

Garret Graham Wellesley, 7th Earl Cowley was born to Christian Arthur Wellesley, 4th Earl Cowley (1890-1962) and his second wife, the US-American Mary Elsie May Himes, who came from Reno and San Francisco born alive, . Christian Arthur Wellesley served in the First World War in the Royal Marines . In the 1920s, much to the displeasure of his aristocratic family, he worked as a stage actor in New York and London . He settled in the United States in the early 1930s to divorce his first wife Mae Pickard in the gambling and divorce paradise of Reno. The marriage was divorced in 1933; that same year he married Mary Elsie May Himes. In June 1934, his son Garret Graham was born.

Garret Graham Wellesley graduated from the University of Southern California at Los Angeles in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science (BS). From 1957 to 1960 he worked as an intelligence officer in the US Army Counter-Intelligence Corps . In 1962 he graduated from Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

He then held various positions at US commercial and financial companies. From 1962 to 1964 he worked as an investment analyst at the financial services company Wells Fargo in San Francisco. From 1964 to 1966 he was an investment counselor at Dodge and Cox in San Francisco. He then served as Vice President and Investment Advisor at Thorndike, Doran, Paine & Lewis in Los Angeles from 1967 to 1969. He was Senior Vice President at Shareholders Capital Corporation in Los Angeles from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was Vice President of Bank of America in San Francisco. From 1978 to 1985 he was Group Vice President (GVP) at Bank of America in London . Between 1985 and 1990 he worked as an independent financial and investment advisor . Between 1990 and 2003 he was an investment partner for Thomas R. Miller & Son (based in the Bermuda Islands ).

After the surprising death of his nephew Richard Wellesley, 6th Earl Cowley , who collapsed on the squash court , Wellesley inherited the title of 7th Earl Cowley (in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , 1857) and the associated ones on December 13, 1975 Titles of 7th Viscount Dangan, in the County of Meath (Peerage of the United Kingdom, 1857) and 8th Baron Cowley of Wellesley, in the County of Somerset (Peerage of the United Kingdom, 1828).

Wellesley died in mid-June 2016 at the age of 81, shortly before his 82nd birthday. The title heir is his son Garret Graham Wellesley, Viscount Dangan. A commemorative requiem for him was held on July 7, 2016 at the Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer & St Thomas More in London.

Membership in the House of Lords

With the death of his nephew Richard Wellesley, 6th Earl Cowley, he inherited the title of Earl Cowley and the then associated seat in the House of Lords in December 1975 . He had been a formal member of the House of Lords since December 13, 1975. In the House of Lords he sat for the Conservative Party. Wellesley was an active member of the House of Lords in the 1980s. He turned down the position of Conservative Party Whip offered by Margaret Thatcher for reasons of time. He was a member of the House of Lords until November 11, 1999. Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Lord Cowley was married a total of four times: first marriage from 1960 to 1966 to Elizabeth Suzanne Lennon and second marriage from 1968 to 1981 with Isabelle O'Bready, from Sherbrooke , Province of Quebec . In 1981 he married the American Paige Deming (†), then finally at the age of 77 years in February 2012 in their fourth marriage the widowed Carola Marion Erskine-Hill (* 1943), the daughter of Sir Robert Erskine-Hill, 2nd Baronet .

His first marriage to Elizabeth Suzanne Lennon had two children, his daughter Lady Tara Lennon Wellesley (* 1962) and his son Garret Graham Wellesley, Viscount Dangan (* 1965). From his third marriage there is also a daughter, Sarah Paige Wellesley.
