description

There has been a pilgrimage to this place since around the year 1000. Before that there was a church dedicated to St. Gunthildis . The building dates from the 11th century and was consecrated by Bishop Gundekar (1057-1075). Today's pilgrimage church Heilig Kreuz is a new building from the Baroque era , built in 1755/56 and equipped until 1770. Belonging to the Eichstätt monastery , its builders and artists shaped the church on the left edge of the valley. The court and cathedral chapter builder Giovanni Domenico Barbieri was responsible for the design and construction management . The frescoes , which were partially painted over in 1901 and exposed again in 1954, were painted by Johann Michael Baader , the stucco (including the stucco pulpit) was made by Johann Kaspar Aicher . The pictorial program is dedicated to the cross of Christ; the main painting in the nave shows its discovery in 320 by the Empress Helena . The baroque high altar contains, flanked by two angels, an altarpiece by Willibald Wunderer , which depicts the veneration of the cross by the four continents. The paintings on the side altars are by Baader.

The showpiece of the church's mobile furnishings is a reliquary from the Romanesque period that was redesigned in 1743 . The pilgrimage to the "miraculous holy cross in Schambach" can only be proven in writing in the 18th century . The Book of Miracles was created in 1724; Miracles are registered from 1797. In addition, votive tablets testify to answers to prayer. The font dates from 1591. Two of the three bells were cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in 1958.

In the holy year 2016 there was a holy door in the church .

Legend

Helena Chapel where the cross was found

Nearby, a maid found a gold cross in the water; but she was unable to pick it up. Only the bishop succeeded. He brought the cross to the nearby Gundhildis Church, where the Holy Cross has been venerated ever since . A chapel was later built where the cross was found.
