Joseph Franz Bittner
Joseph Franz Bittner (born September 14, 1852 in Hilpoltstein , † February 25, 1915 in Eichstätt ) was a German organ builder .
Life
Joseph Franz Bittner was the son of the organ builder Joseph Bittner . He completed an apprenticeship in his parents' company and attended the trade school in Augsburg. Then he went on a hike and was “active in various respected organ building companies”. After completing his compulsory military service, he worked briefly with his father and in 1880 took over the company of Augustin Ferdinand Bittner junior. in Nuremberg . He was able to expand it by purchasing a new piece of land on Deutschherrnstrasse. At times his father also supported him in his work. In 1897, due to competitive pressure, he gave up the Nuremberg company, which by then had a 70-year tradition, took over his father's workshop and in 1897 moved the company to Eichstätt. On June 7, 1907, he received the title of court organ builder . His younger brother Karl also became an organ builder, as did his sons Wilhelm August and Max Rupert. Wilhelm August, who had been with the company since 1908, took over the business after the death of Joseph Franz Bittner.
Works
At the beginning of his activity he built organs with mechanical action . Like most of his fellow organ builders, he began building organs with pneumatic action . His specific development is the "bowl drawer": This is a register drawer that is based on the usual membrane or pocket drawer with horizontal pockets. Instead of a rectangular hollow wooden body, on the upper edge of which the membrane made of the finest nappa leather is glued, one finds a round, hemispherical piece of wood, hollow on the inside, similar to a bowl. All of these membrane constructions, especially the design with the variant of the horizontal pockets, had not proven to be particularly effective. In the event of a malfunction (howling) caused by soiling or aging of the leather, the pipes must be cleared to get to the valves. Attempts to make this type of shop more “service-friendly” caused severe static damage to the shop structure (for example in Beilngries).
