history
When Großweingarten was first mentioned in a document in 1294, there was already a sacred building dedicated to St. Michael . The church, which was then built on the highest point of the Michelsberg, was probably built in the 13th century. It can be assumed that it originally consisted only of a small Romanesque chapel , the floor plan of which corresponded to that of the current tower.
Building description
The hall church is in ashlar masonry -built building . The late Gothic choir and the nave had a flat ceiling inside. Like the choir tower from 1472, whose basement was from the middle of the 13th century, they were fundamentally rebuilt in 1794 . The side bell tower , which is provided with a pointed helmet and a lantern and standing in the gusset of the choir and nave, was raised.
In 1822/1823 the church was expanded in a classical style ; The nave and choir were raised again.
On the middle part of the war memorial for the fallen of both world wars in front of the church stands a life-size archangel with a sword and an iron cross .
organ
On the gallery there is an organ by Joseph Franz Bittner with a cone chest and pneumatic action and stop mechanism . The instrument was built in 1901 and has 12 sounding stops on two manuals and a pedal . The disposition is as follows:
