The class EF200 ( Jap. EF200形 , EF200-gata ) is a direct current electro locomotive with the wheel arrangement Bo'Bo'Bo ', which since 1992 by JR Freight is used for freight transport in Japan.

Overview

The EF200 series was developed to meet the electric locomotives of Class EF66 in heavy freight service on the Tōkaidō Main Line and the Sanyo Main Line west of Tokyo to replace. It is equipped with six 1,000 kW (1,300 PS ) FMT2 traction motors, with a total output of 6,000 kW (8,000 PS). However, the locomotive was viewed as over-specified and unnecessarily expensive, and the order was terminated after the delivery of 20 series locomotives. The subsequently procured class EF210 became the standard construction for the transport of freight trains on the Tokaido main line and the Sanyo main line. Originally developed to pull 1,600 t freight trains, the EF200 series initially had to be limited to a load of 1,200 t due to problems with insufficient power supply capacities in the contact lines.

commitment

In 2012 the EF200 fleet comprised 20 locomotives (EF200-901 and EF200-2 - 20), stationed at the Suita depot in Osaka. They were primarily used for service in front of 1,300-tonne freight trains west of Tokyo on the Tokaido and Sanyo main lines.

history

EF200-4 in original paint scheme, December 2006

The prototype locomotive, EF200-901, was delivered in March 1990 for extensive testing. The first series locomotives were delivered to the Shin-Tsurumi depot in Tokyo in 1992 and were used on the Tōkaidō main line and the Sanyo main line from the summer of that year . In 1992 the EF200 series was awarded the Laurel Prize , which is awarded every year by the Japan Railfan Club.

On April 1, 1999, the entire series from Shin-Tsurumi in Tokyo was transferred to the Suita Depot in Osaka. Between 2006 and 2009, the entire EF200 fleet was repainted in the paint scheme used for the newer EF210 series locomotives . EF200-901 was repainted in 2007.

In 2007, the power of the locomotives was throttled to match the performance of the older locomotives of the EF66 series . In 2011 a class EF200 locomotive, the EF200-1, was retired.
