The JR Freight series EF210 ( Japanese EF210 形 , EF210-gata ) is a direct current electric locomotive with the wheel arrangement Bo'Bo'Bo ', which has been used by JR Freight for freight transport in Japan since 1996 .
The machines are built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe . They are stationed in the depots of Okayama , Shin-Tsurumi and Suita in Osaka prefecture and are mainly used for freight trains on the Tōkaidō and the San'yō main line . There they replace the locomotives of the JNR class EF66 . As of April 1, 2016, 101 units were in use.
technology
The locomotives run on the Japanese standard Cape gauge (1067 millimeter gauge). They are 18,200 millimeters long, 2,887 mm wide and 3,980 mm high. Their mass is 100.8 tons. They run under 1.5 kilovolt DC voltage, are equipped with AC motors, reach a maximum of 110 km / h, produce 3,390 kW and have a maximum pulling force of 199 kN .
variants
EF 210-901
This machine is a pre-production model, which was assigned to the Shin-Tsurumi depot in 1996.
EF210-0
The machines to be designated in this way, 18 in number, correspond to the series model. There are some changes that resulted from testing the pre-production model:
- the traction motors are no longer of type FMT3, but of type FMT4, with the same output of 565 kilowatts;
- The bogies were shortened from 2,600 millimeters to 2,500 millimeters.
The first locomotive, number EF210-1, was assigned to the Okayama depot in July 1998. The entire inventory of all these machines can also be found here.
EF210-100
The subclass EF210-100 contains some further improvements, in particular the replacement of the power electronics on GTO basis with electronics with IGBT technology . In addition, the locomotives now have single-arm pantographs . The 73 machines, which were ready for use as of April 1, 2016, are distributed among the Okayama, Shin-Tsurumi and Suita depots.
EF210-300
This sub-series was introduced from March 2013. It has been specially procured for the replenishment service on a steep section of the San'yō Main Line between Seno ( Aki Municipality , Hiroshima Prefecture) and Hachihonmatsu ( Higashihiroshima ) stations. In this service the series replaces the JR Freight series EF67, which was also specially procured for this purpose . The first locomotive, EF210-301, was delivered by the manufacturer on September 3, 2012. Another 14 locomotives were added by February 2019.

Naming scheme
The series designation "EF210" results from the technical features of the machine; the pre-production model bears the standard number 901. "EF210" is broken down as follows:
- E for an electric locomotive
- F due to the 6 driven axles
- 210 for a DC locomotive with AC motors.
