Georg Schweickhard

Georg Schweickhard (also Schweikhardt , Schweickard , Schweicker , Schwecker , Schwicker ; * in Dillingen an der Donau ; † October 13, 1616 ) was rector of the University of Würzburg several times from 1598 . In addition, he worked as Vicar General of the Diocese of Würzburg.

Life

Georg Schweickhard was born in the first half of the 16th century in Dillingen an der Donau , part of the Diocese of Augsburg . The family had produced some eminent clergymen before. For example, Georg's older brother, Veit Schweickard senior, was active as a scholar council in Würzburg. Schweickhard's youth in the Augsburg royal seat is not mentioned in the sources. It is possible that he enrolled at the University of Dillingen on September 30, 1554 as a teenager .

On the other hand, a degree at the Bavarian University of Ingolstadt , which Schweickhard started on November 6, 1562, is guaranteed. He completed his studies with the acquisition of the Licentiate . Schweickhard was probably added to the list of scholarship holders of the Würzburg prince-bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg , who promoted promising young clergymen in order to later bring them into his domain.

Schweickhard came to Würzburg immediately after completing his studies . Here he was ordained a priest on March 5, 1569 and assigned to the Haug collegiate monastery . On March 31, 1569, he was elected preacher of the monastery, an office that he would hold until his death. In 1587 Schweickhard became a Scholaster and in 1598 he received a canonical. It is uncertain whether he also temporarily held the office of dean. In any case, he was also used as a will and turnar within the monastery .

At the same time, Friedrich von Wirsberg soon appointed the young clergyman to his clergy , which was to be the highest administrative body of the bishopric. Schweickhard thus occupied an intermediate position. For example, when he founded the Kilianeum seminary in 1579 , he negotiated with the canons of Haug Abbey in his role as clergyman. However, he mainly drew criticism from the cathedral chapter , which in 1582 demanded his dismissal from episcopal services. From 1576 to 1584 Schweickhard was inspector of the seminar.

Schweickhard made many trips through the Hochstift for Friedrich von Wirsberg. First he was transferred to Neustadt an der Saale , where chaos reigned after the Reformation. Then Schweickhard tried to install a Catholic priest again in the predominantly Lutheran Münnerstadt . After Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn was elected , the clergyman's influence continued to grow. So he accompanied several nuns from the Swabian monastery Oberschönfeld to Wechterswinkel , where he again ensured monastic life.

Julius Echter used Georg Schweickhard primarily for visitations . He was commissioner for the parishes belonging to the Ellwangen Abbey in the Diocese of Würzburg and in 1586 examined the emigration of Lutheran exiles from Münnerstadt. He was also used in Karlstadt and in the Geisa rural chapter. In Würzburg, Schweickhard pushed the reform of the St. Afra Monastery and appeared in negotiations about the St. Burkard Monastery .

It is unclear when Schweickhard was promoted to vicar general of the diocese and thus to its chief financial administrator. He installed pastors in this role. This underpinned his extraordinary role, because actually the vicars general were recruited from the ranks of the noble cathedral chapter. As the culmination of his career, Georg Schweickhard was appointed Rector Magnificus of the University of Würzburg in 1598 and 1608 . He died on October 13, 1616.
