Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington (born February 3, 1807 in Soho , London , † August 13, 1884 in Brighton ) was a British general , peer and politician .

family

Wellesley was born as the eldest son of Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and his wife Catherine Pakenham on Harley Street in Soho, London. He was baptized on June 27, 1808 in St. Patrick's Church in Dublin . As apparent marriage of his father he led from 1812 to 1814 the courtesy title Lord Douro and from 1814 to 1852 the courtesy title Marquess of Douro . In 1852 he inherited his father's title of nobility.

On April 18, 1839, he married Lady Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Field Marshal George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale, and his wife Lady Susan Montagu in St. George's Church in London .

He died at the age of 77 at Brighton Railway Station in Sussex and was buried on August 19, 1884 in the family home cemetery at Stratfield Saye House in Basingstoke . Since he remained childless, his nephew Henry Wellesley , the eldest son of his younger brother Lord Charles Wellesley , inherited his title of nobility.

Military and political career

Wellesley was educated at Eton College in Berkshire from 1818 to 1824 . On March 20, 1823, he entered the British Army and bought an officer post as Ensign of the 81st Regiment of Foot . In 1824 he began studying at Christ Church College of Oxford University which he held until 1830 at the 1825 Trinity College of Cambridge University continued. On 6 May 1825 he moved as Ensign to the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot , and on June 2, 1825 as Cornet of the Royal Horse Guards , where he on July 1, 1827. Lieutenant and on May 8, 1828 to Captain appointed has been. On July 24, 1828, he switched to the 60th (King's Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot as captain .

From 1829 to 1832 he belonged as a deputy of the Tories for the Borough Aldeburgh the British House of Commons on February 10, received since 1830 graduation for Master of Arts in Cambridge. On November 2, 1830 he was promoted to major of the 60th (King's Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot and moved to the Rifle Brigade on August 2, 1831 . Here he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on August 12, 1834 . On April 6, 1835 he was at the University of Cambridge for Doctor of Laws honoris causa ( Doctor of Laws, LL.D. appointed). From 1837 to 1852 he was a member of the House of Commons for Norwich . On November 9, 1846, he rose to the rank of Brevet - Colonel of the Rifle Brigade on.

When his father died on September 14, 1852, he inherited his British nobility titles as 2nd Duke of Wellington , 2nd Marquess of Wellington , 2nd Marquess Douro , 2nd Viscount Wellington and 2nd Baron Douro . He became a member of the House of Lords and resigned from the House of Commons. From 1853 to 1858 he held the court office of Master of the Horse and also belonged to the Privy Council as Privy Counselor from February 7, 1853 . On August 4, 1853, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel and Commander of the Victoria (Middlesex) Rifle Volunteer Corps . On June 20, 1854 he was promoted to major-general and on February 2, 1862 to lieutenant-general . In 1858 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion .

On July 25, 1863 he inherited the Irish nobility titles of 6th Earl of Mornington , 6th Viscount Wellesley and 7th Baron Mornington from his second nephew William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, 5th Earl of Mornington . From 1868 he also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex .
