Marquess of Londonderry
Marquess of Londonderry is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
The family seat of the Marquesses was Mount Stewart near Newtownards in County Down, Northern Ireland .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on March 3, 1816 for the Irish politician Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Londonderry .
He had already been elevated to Baron Londonderry on September 20, 1789 , Viscount Castlereagh of Castlereagh in the County of Down on October 1, 1795 and Earl of Londonderry of the County of Londonderry on August 8, 1796 . All of these titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland.
The future 3rd Marquess was raised to Baron Stewart , of Stewart's Court and Ballylawn in the County of Donegal on July 1, 1814 . This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 . On March 28, 1823 he was also raised in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Earl Vane and Viscount Seaham of Seaham , in the County Palatine of Durham .
The later 3rd Marquess took the family name Vane in 1829 as heir to the property of his second wife, the heiress of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet († 1813) . His eldest son from this second marriage, who later became the 5th Marquess, added the family name to Vane-Tempest in 1851 and his son, who later became the 6th Marquess, in 1885 to Vane-Tempest-Stewart .
