Earl of Londonderry

Earl of Londonderry is a hereditary title of nobility created three times in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was first awarded on August 23, 1622 for Thomas Ridgeway, 1st Baron Ridgeway , together with the subordinate title Viscount Gallen-Ridgeway . On May 25, 1616 he had already been awarded the title of Baron Ridgeway of Gallen-Ridgeway, and in 1611 the title of Ridgeway Baronet of Torrington in the County of Devon . The titles belonged to the Peerage of Ireland or Baronetage of England and expired on the death of his great-grandson, the 4th Earl in 1714.

In the second award, the title was created on October 8, 1726 for Thomas Pitt, 1st Baron of Londonderry , together with the subordinate title Viscount Gallen-Ridgeway . He was the husband of Lady Frances Ridgeway, daughter and heir to the late 4th Earl's first bestowal. On June 3, 1719 he had already been awarded the title of Baron of Londonderry . The titles belonged to the Peerage of Ireland and expired on the death of his younger son, the 3rd Earl in 1765.

In the third award, the title was created on August 8, 1796 for Robert Stewart, 1st Viscount Castlereagh . He had already been raised to Baron Londonderry on September 20, 1789 and on October 1, 1795 to Viscount Castlereagh of Castlereagh in the County of Down and was raised to Marquess of Londonderry on March 3, 1816 . All of these titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland. The Earldom has since been a minor title of the Marquess. The future 3rd Marquess was elevated to Baron Stewart of Stewart's Court and Ballylawn, in the County of Donegal on July 1, 1814 , and Earl Vane and Viscount Seaham on March 28, 1823 . The titles from 1814 and 1823 belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Alleged title heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is the brother of the current title holder, Lord Reginald Vane-Tempest-Stewart (* 1977).
