Viscount Dillon , of Costello-Gallen in the County of Mayo , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on March 16, 1622 for the Hiberno-Norman landowner and military leader Theobald Dillon . His great-grandson, the 7th Viscount fought from 1688 during the Glorious Revolution on the side of the Catholic King James II , fell in 1691. The Battle of Aughrim was ostracized in 1691. His eldest son Henry obtained the restoration of the title for himself as the 8th Viscount in 1694. His brother the Hon. Arthur Dillon made a career in the French military from 1690 and received the French title of Count Comte Dillon from King Louis XIV in 1711 . In addition, the Jacobite pretender to the throne Jacob III raised him . 1721 to Earl Dillon ; The latter title was not recognized due to the failure of all Jacobite restitution attempts.
