Baron Rathdonnell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Rathdonnell , of Rathdonnell in the County of Donegal , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . The title is named after the townland Rathdonnell near Letterkenny .

It is (after the Barony of Curzon of Kedleston ) the penultimate title of baron that was awarded in this peerage.

The barons' family residence is Lisnavagh House near Rathvilly in County Carlow .

Award

The title was created on December 21, 1868 for Lord Lieutenant of County Louth , John McClintock . Since he had no children, the award was made with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, the title could also be inherited by the male descendants of his younger brother William McClintock-Bunbury, who died in 1866.

Accordingly, the title fell to his nephew Thomas McClintock-Bunbury as 2nd baron when the 1st Baron died on May 17, 1879. Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Thomas McClintock-Bunbury as 5th Baron since 1959 .
