Earl of Courtown
Earl of Courtown is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on April 12, 1762 for the Irish politician James Stopford, 1st Baron Courtown . Together with the Earldom he was awarded the subordinate title Viscount Stopford . As early as September 19, 1758, he had been raised to Baron Courtown , of Courtown in the County of Wexford , also in the Peerage of Ireland .
His eldest son, the 2nd Earl, was a Tory politician and Treasurer of the Household from 1784 to 1793 . On June 7, 1796 he was given the title of Baron Saltersford , of Saltersford in the County of Chester . The title belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain and, in contrast to the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 .
The historic family seat of the Earls was Courtown House near Gorey in County Wexford .
