Viscount Mountgarret

Viscount Mountgarret is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on October 23, 1550 for the Hon. Richard Butler , younger son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde .

The 12th Viscount was raised to Earl of Kilkenny on December 20, 1793 , also in the Peerage of Ireland. This title already expired on his death on July 16, 1846, the Viscountcy fell to his nephew as the 13th Viscount.

The 14th Viscount was awarded the title Baron Mountgarret , of Nidd in the West Riding of the County of York on June 20, 1911 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . In contrast to the Irish Viscountcy, this title was linked to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 . The barony is listed as a subordinate title of the Viscount.

The alleged title heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is the brother of the current title holder, Edmund Butler (* 1962).
