Earl of Longford is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland . The title is named after the city of Longford in Ireland.

The Earls family seat is Tullynally Castle in County Westmeath in Ireland.

Awards

The title was first awarded on December 18, 1677 to Francis Aungier, 1st Viscount Longford . However, after his brother, the 2nd Earl, died in 1706 without a male heir, the title expired.

Her niece Elizabeth Cuffier married Thomas Packenham, who was ennobled as Baron Longford on May 7, 1756 . On June 20, 1785, Elizabeth, her husband had since died, was raised to Countess of Longford in her own right.

Subordinate title

The 1st Earl first bestowal was on November 8, 1675 in the Peerage of Ireland to Viscount Longford and had already inherited the title of 3rd Baron Aungier , of Longford , from his uncle in 1655 , who on June 29, 1621 in the Peerage of Ireland had been given to his grandfather. Both titles expired in 1706 together with the earl title.

Subordinate titles to the Earl of Longford are Baron Longford , in the County of Longford (created 1756), Baron Silchester , of Silchester in the County of Southampton (created 1821), and Baron Pakenham , of Cowley in the City of Oxford (created 1945) . The latter title was awarded on October 12, 1945 to the younger brother of the 6th Earl, who later inherited the dignity of the Earl from him.

While the Earl's dignity and the Barony of Longford are assigned to the Peerage of Ireland, the other two baronies belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The title heir carries the title Baron Silchester as a courtesy title .

Other titles

The 7th Earl was given the title of Baron Pakenham of Cowley , of Cowley in the County of Oxfordshire , on November 16, 1999 for life ( Life Peerage ) so that he could keep his seat in the House of Lords despite the House of Lords Act 1999 . The title expired on his death in 2001.
