In the 21st century, a Chinese garden with a pagoda and a Tibetan garden with waterfalls and watercourses were added.

history

In 1665, Henry Pakenham , a captain of the Parliamentary Dragoons , was given land to compensate for outstanding payments, which included Tullynally. His grandson, Thomas Pakenham , was promoted to 1st Baron Longford in 1756. Thomas' grandson, another Thomas and 3rd Baron Longford, also inherited the higher nobility title of 2nd Earl of Longford from his grandmother, the Countess of Longford, in 1794.

The 2nd Earl had the 17th century house remodeled in a neo-Gothic style in the early 1800s, adding towers and a moat . The result was a house that was larger than any other crenellated house in Ireland in its day. Since then, the Pakenham family has inherited the estate up to the current 8th Earl . It is now the largest privately owned house in Ireland.

British Army General Sir Edward Pakenham , GCB , was born and raised in this country house. His older sister Kitty married Arthur Wellesley in 1806 , who was later promoted to Duke of Wellington .
