Granard ( Irish : Gránard ) is a country town in northeast County Longford in the central northeast interior of the Republic of Ireland.

Traffic and demographics

The place is at the confluence of the regional road R194 with the national road N55 , between Athlone in the southwest and Cavan in the northeast. Part of the R194 runs through the village. To the rail transport in Ireland Granard is disconnected; however, the place is connected supraregionally by Bus Éireann . The nearest major town is Edgeworthstown in the southwest.

The population of Granard (excluding the surrounding area) was determined to be 816 in the 2016 census , which corresponds to a decrease in the local population of 20% compared to the 2011 census.

Attractions

To the northwest of Granard is the Tomb of Cleenrah portal and to the east of Granard is Lough Sheelin .
