Moth of Granard

Moth of Granard

The Motte von Granard was built in 1199 as a Motte-and-Bailey by the Anglo-Norman Richard Tuite ( Irish Risteárd de Tiúit ) on a hill overlooking Granard in County Longford in Ireland . His death in 1210 is recorded in the annals of the four masters . His remains lie in the Cistercian Abbey of Abbeylara that was apparently founded by him or one of his sons. The moth later became known as Rath Granard and may have served the Ó Fearghail (O'Farrell) clan as an inauguration site .Seán Ó Fearghail , who presumably died here in 1475 immediately after his inauguration, was also buried in Abbeylara.

Apparently one of Ireland's largest moths was built on an existing hill. The round hill is about 9.0 meters high and has a D-shaped outer bailey with a moat on the southwest side.
