Tyrrell Pass Castle

Tyrrellspass Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhealach an Tirialaigh ), which dates back to around 1411, is a tower house southwest of the village of Tyrrellspass in County Westmeath, Ireland . It is the only remaining castle owned by the Tyrrells who came to Ireland during the Anglo-Norman invasion .

description

The Niederungsburg is about 20 meters high and follows the usual pattern of a tower house, which was built of stone, served mainly defensive purposes and consists of a number of rooms arranged one above the other. The original spiral staircase and one of the original roof beams from 1290 can still be seen today. This exposed roof beam lies in a part of the restaurant called the Lounge . At the entrance there is a "killer hole" through which intruders could be attacked.

history

Tyrrellspass is the modern name of Fartullagh (Irish Fir Thulach ), where in 1597 Captain Richard Tyrrell , a chief ally of Aodh Mór Ó Néill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone , won a victory against the troops of the English in the nine years' war , in the so-called Battle of Tyrrellspass Crown won.

During the reconquest of Ireland in 1650, the castle's residents are said to have suffered greatly and many were executed. Soon after, the Rochfort family , who later became Earls of Belvedere , acquired the castle. In 1796 the 2nd Earl leased the castle to the army as barracks. In 1850 Charles Brinsley Marley , grandson of the 1st Earl's daughter, became the owner. Then the property fell to Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Howard-Bury , the discoverer. He later sold the houses on the property.

After an eventful history of raids, the castle was extensively restored by Phillip Ginnell in the 1970s .

today

In the early 1990s the building was converted into a modern restaurant. Today it operates under the name Tyrrellspass Castle Restaurant . Medieval banquets are also held there.
