Viscount Grandison
Viscount Grandison is a British hereditary nobility title awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .
Awards
For the first time on January 3, 1621 the title Viscount Grandison , of Limerick in the County of Leitrim , was bestowed on the English military and politician Sir Oliver St. John . Since he had no children, the award was made with the special note that the title was also given to the male descendants of his niece Barbara Villier († 1672), the daughter of his eldest brother Sir John St. John (1552–1594), in the absence of his own male descendants ), can pass. On May 21, 1626 he was also raised in the Peerage of England to Baron Tregoz , of Highworth in the County of Wiltshire, this time without any special inheritance regulation. Accordingly, when he died in 1630, the Viscountcy fell to his niece's eldest son, his great-nephew William Villiers as the 2nd Viscount, while the barony was extinguished. His great-nephew, the 5th Viscount, was elevated to Earl Grandison in the Peerage of Ireland on September 11, 1721 , but this title already expired on his death on May 14, 1766, and the Viscountcy fell to his second-degree great-nephew William Villiers, 3rd Earl of Jersey , as 6th Viscount. He already held the title of 3rd Earl of Jersey (1697) and 3rd Viscount Villiers (1691). The three titles have since been combined.
In the second bestowal on April 10, 1746, the title Viscountess Grandison , of Dromana in the County of Waterford , was created for Elizabeth Mason , the only daughter of Earl Grandison, who died in 1766. On February 19, 1767 she was also raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Countess Grandison and Viscountess Villiers . All three titles expired on the death of her son, the 2nd Earl, on July 14, 1800.
