Awards
The title was first bestowed on August 27, 1616 in the Peerage of England George Villiers , along with the subordinate title Baron Whaddon , of Whaddon in the County of Buckingham. On January 5, 1617 he was also elevated to the Earl of Buckingham , on January 1, 1618 to the Marquess of Buckingham and on May 18, 1623 to the Duke of Buckingham and Earl of Coventry . His son, the 2nd Duke , inherited the title 19th Baron de Ros from his mother around 1663 . When he died on April 16, 1687, all his titles lapsed, with the exception of the Barony de Ros, which fell in Abeyance .
In the second award, the title Viscount Villiers , of Dartford in the County of Kent, was newly created for Edward Villiers in the Peerage of England . He was a grandson of the oldest half-brother of the Viscount's first award. Together with the Viscountcy he was given the subordinate title of Baron Villiers , of Hoo in the County of Kent. On October 13, 1697, he was also raised to the Earl of Jersey . The Viscountcy has since been a subordinate title of the respective earl and is used by his eldest son as a courtesy title . Today's title holder has been William Child-Villiers, 10th Earl of Jersey , as 10th Viscount Villiers since 1998 .
In parallel to the title of the second award, the title Viscountess Villiers was awarded in the third award in the Peerage of Ireland to Elizabeth Mason, 1st Viscountess Grandison , together with the superordinate title Countess Grandison . She was the only surviving child of John Villiers, 1st Earl Grandison, who died in 1766, and was raised to Viscountess Grandison , of Dromana in the County of Waterford in the Peerage of Ireland on April 10, 1746 . All three titles expired on the death of their son, George Mason-Villiers, 2nd Earl of Grandison on July 14, 1800.
