Marquess of Buckingham was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of Great Britain . The title was named after the English city of Buckingham .

Awards

The title was first bestowed on January 1, 1618 in the Peerage of England to the courtier and military officer George Villiers, 1st Earl of Buckingham . He had already been awarded the title Viscount Villiers and Baron Whaddon , of Whaddon in the County of Buckingham on August 27, 1616 , and the title of Earl of Buckingham on January 5, 1617 . On May 18, 1623 he was also raised to Duke of Buckingham and Earl of Coventry . His son, the 2nd Duke , inherited the title 19th Baron de Ros from his mother around 1663 . When he died on April 16, 1687, all his titles lapsed, with the exception of the Barony de Ros, which fell in Abeyance .

In the second award, the title was recreated on December 4, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain for George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 3rd Earl Temple . In 1779 he had inherited the titles of 3rd Earl Temple , 4th Viscount Cobham and 4th Baron Cobham from his paternal uncle . His son, the 2nd Marquess, was also raised to Duke of Buckingham and Chandos , Marquess of Chandos and Earl Temple of Stowe on February 4, 1822 . At the death of his grandson, the 3rd Duke, on March 26, 1889, who left no male offspring, the title Earl Temple of Stowe fell to his nephew William Temple-Gore-Langton as 4th Earl due to a special inheritance regulation in the female line ; the titles Viscount Cobham and Baron Cobham fell to his distant relative Charles Lyttelton, 5th Baron Lyttelton as 8th Viscount; his remaining titles expired.
