Awards

The title was first created on May 18, 1623 for George Villiers, 1st Marquess of Buckingham , as a subordinate title of the simultaneously awarded title Duke of Buckingham . This had already been awarded the title Viscount Villiers and Baron Whaddon on August 27, 1616 , the title Earl of Buckingham on January 5, 1617 and the title Marquess of Buckingham on January 1, 1618 . His son, the 2nd Duke , inherited the title 19th Baron de Ros from his mother around 1663 . When he died on April 16, 1687, all his titles lapsed, with the exception of the Barony de Ros, which fell in Abeyance .

The second bestowal of the title was created on April 26, 1697 for Thomas Coventry, 5th Baron Coventry . The award was made with the special addition that, in the absence of his own male descendants, he also passed on male descendants of his uncle Francis Coventry (1612–1680) and then to his three second cousins William, Thomas and Henry Coventry, grandsons of his deceased great-uncle Walter Coventry ( † 1640), son of 1st Baron Coventry , and whose male descendants can be inherited. Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Deerhurst , of the Hundred of Deerhurst in the County of Gloucester . This title is used as a courtesy title by the eldest son of the respective earl . The grandfather of the first earl of the second bestowal, the Lord Keeper Sir Thomas Coventry, had already been awarded the title of Baron Coventry , of Aylesborough in the County of Worcester , on April 10, 1629 . This title expired with the death of the fourth earl in 1719.
