Baron Mendip
Baron Mendip , of Mendip in the County of Somerset , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on August 13, 1794 for the former MP and statesman Welbore Ellis . Since he was childless, he was given the title with the special addition that, in the absence of male offspring, this title could also be inherited successively to the following three sons of his sister Anne Agar, née Ellis, and their male descendants:
- James Agar, 1st Viscount Clifden († 1789);
- Welbore Ellis Agar († 1805);
- Charles Agar, later 1st Earl of Normanton († 1809).
Accordingly, when the 1st Baron died, the title fell to the eldest son of the aforementioned James Agar, namely Henry Agar, 2nd Viscount Clifden , who two years later took the family name Ellis. He already carried the title Viscount Clifden , which was bestowed on his father , to which the barony was subordinate. With the death of the 8th Viscount in 1974, his line of descendants died out, thereupon the Barony of Mendip fell to a relative of the line of descendants of the above-mentioned Charles Agar, namely Shaun Agar, 6th Earl of Normanton . The remaining titles expired. The barony has since been a subordinate of the Earl of Normanton .
