Viscount Charlemont is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on October 8, 1665 for William Caulfeild, 5th Baron Caulfield of Charlemont . This had already inherited from his brother in 1642 the subordinate title Baron Caulfield of Charlemont , which was created on December 22, 1620 in the Peerage of Ireland for his great uncle Sir Toby Caulfeild (1565-1627).

His descendant, the 4th Viscount, was elevated to Earl of Charlemont on December 23, 1763 in the Peerage of Ireland . His son, the 2nd Earl, was also awarded the title of Baron Charlemont , of Charlemont in the County of Armagh, on February 13, 1837 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , with the special note that this also went to in the absence of his own descendants his brother, the House of Commons Hon. Henry Caulfeild (1779–1862), and his descendants are hereditary. When the 2nd Earl actually left no sons in 1863, the titles fell accordingly to the son of his aforementioned brother as 3rd Earl. When he died childless on January 12, 1892, the earldom and the British barony became extinct; the Viscountcy and the Irish Barony fell to his uncle 4th degree as 7th Viscount Charlemont.

Today's title holder is John Caulfeild as the 15th Viscount Charlemont.
