Viscount Chetwynd

Viscount Chetwynd , of Bearhaven in the County of Cork , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award

On June 29, 1717, the title was created for the English MP Walter Chetwynd , along with the subordinate title Baron Rathdowne , of Rathdowne in the County of Dublin . Both titles were given to him with the special note that in the absence of male descendants of his own, they could also be inherited by his two brothers, who were also members of the House of Commons, and their male descendants. Although he was an Englishman from Staffordshire , the titles were not given in the Peerage of England , but the Peerage of Ireland. This enabled him to have his seat in the English House of Commonsretained and did not lose this in favor of a seat in the English House of Lords .

The family seat of the first Viscount, Ingestre Hall near Stafford , fell to his daughter on the death of his younger brother, the 2nd Viscount, in 1767, while the titles fell to his youngest brother, the 3rd Viscount. Today's title holder has been his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson as the 11th Viscount since 2015. He lives in Bryanston , South Africa .
