Viscount Boyne , in the Province of Leinster , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The Viscount family home has been Burwarton House near Bridgnorth in Shropshire since the 19th century .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on August 20, 1717 by King George I for Major General Gustavus Hamilton, 1st Baron Hamilton of Stackallan , who came from the Scottish clan Hamilton . This had during the Glorious Revolution and the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion in Ireland on the part of King William III. fought and particularly distinguished himself in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne .

On October 20, 1715, the first Viscount in Peerage of Ireland was given the subordinate title Baron Hamilton , of Stackallan in the County of Meath .

His great-great-great-grandson, the 7th Viscount, became general heir to his father-in-law Matthew Russell, lord of Brancepeth Castle . On February 26, 1850, he added that of the Russel family to his family name and coat of arms . On August 31, 1866 he was given the subordinate title Baron Brancepeth , of Brancepeth in the County of Durham . This belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and was directly linked to a seat in the British House of Lords until the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force .

Title heir ( Heir apparent ) is the eldest twin son of the current Viscount, Hon. Gustavus Hamilton-Russell (* 1999).
