Marquess of Donegall is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . The title is named after County Donegal in Ireland .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was created on June 27, 1791 for Arthur Chichester, 5th Earl of Donegall . Arthur Chichester was a descendant of Sir John Chichester (1519 / 20-1568), who was 1557 Sheriff of Devon . Whose eldest son Arthur Chichester (1563-1625) was from 1604 to 1615 Lord Deputy of Ireland and was raised on February 23, 1613 in the Peerage of Ireland to Baron Chichester , of Belfast in the County of Antrim . The title already expired on his death on February 19, 1625. In his memory, his younger brother Edward Chichester became Baron Chichester , of Belfast in the County of Antrim, and Viscount Chichester , of Carrickfergus on April 1, 1625 in the Peerage of Ireland raised in the County of Antrim. Before he inherited him as the 2nd Viscount in 1648, his son was raised to Earl of Donegall in the Peerage of Ireland on March 30, 1647 . The earldom was awarded with the special addition that it could also be passed on to the male descendants of his father. Arthur Chichester , the 5th Earl, was awarded the title Baron Fisherwick , of Fisherwick in the County of Stafford on July 3, 1790 in the Peerage of Great Britain , and on June 27, 1791 he was also named Marquess of Donegall in the Peerage of Ireland raised with the subordinate title Earl of Belfast .

The later 3rd Marquess was raised in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Ennishowen and Carrickfergus , of Ennishowen in the County of Donegal and of Carrickfergus in the County of Antrim in 1841, before he inherited his father in 1844 . Since his sons died before him, the barony of 1841 was extinguished on his death, his younger brother inherited his other titles as 4th Marquess. With the death of his grandson the 6th Marquess in 1975, the descendant line of the 2nd Marquess became extinct. The title inherited from his distant relative, Dermot Chichester, 5th Baron Templemore as 7th Marquess. This already held the title Baron Templemore , created on September 10, 1831 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The historic family seat was Dunbrody House , near Arthurstown in County Wexford , Ireland , which is now a luxury hotel and restaurant. The surrounding lands, however, are still owned by the current Marquess Dunbrody - the family now resides on the Dunbrody Park estate there .
