Arthur Chichester, 1st Baron Chichester (born May 1563 in Devon (England) , † February 19, 1625 in London ) was an English politician and seafarer who was instrumental in founding the Plantations in Ireland .

Life

The eldest son of Sir John Chichester (1519 / 20-1569), who was sheriff of Devon in 1557, studied at Exeter College in Oxford and commanded HMS Larke against the Spanish Armada in 1588. In 1595 he accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his expedition to America. He was involved in the conquest of Cadiz in 1596 during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604) and was knighted for it. After the death of his brother John at the Battle of Carrickfergus in November 1597, Arthur Chichester was appointed governor of Carrickfergus. From 1605 to 1616 he was Lord Deputy of Ireland and promoted the establishment of the Plantations of English, Welsh and Scottish immigrants. His actions caused the flight of the counts ( Irish Imeacht na nIarlaí or Teitheadh ​​na nIarlaí ) 1607, in which the Earls Hugh O'Neill (2nd Earl of Tyrone ) and Rory O'Donnell (1st Earl of Tyrconnell ) together with some of them Relatives left the island of Ireland to avoid the threat of detention. Arthur Chichester was also instrumental in founding and expanding Belfast , now the capital of Northern Ireland. From his marriage to Lettice, widow of Walter Vaughan of St. Brides and Roland Lacharn of Golden Grove, daughter of Sir John Perrot , he had a son, Arthur Chichester, who died in 1606, the year of his birth. In the absence of descendants, his baron title expired on his death, but was re-awarded on April 1, 1625 for his younger brother Edward Chichester .
