Earl of Tyrone is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded three times in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

For the first time the title was given on October 1, 1542 to the king of Tír Eóghain Conn Bacach Ó Néill , whose kingdom gave the current Irish county Tyrone its name. Conn O'Neill submitted to the English King Henry VIII , who then awarded him the title of Earl . His succession was controversial among his descendants. Finally, his grandson Hugh O'Neill was able to assert himself as Earl of Tyrone. He rebelled against the English crown from 1594 to 1603 ( Nine Years War (Ireland) ) and had to flee Ireland in 1607 ( flight of the counts ). On October 28, 1614 he was ostracized by parliament , with which his title was revoked and his lands were confiscated by the crown.

On October 9, 1673, the title for Richard Power, 6th Baron Power was recreated, along with the subordinate title Viscount Decies . He already held the title Baron Power , created in 1535 . The titles expired on the death of the 3rd Earl on August 19, 1704, who left no male descendants.

In the third award, the title was reassigned on July 18, 1746 for Marcus Beresford, 1st Viscount Tyrone . He was the son-in-law of the 3rd Earl's second bestowal and had been promoted to Viscount of Tyrone and Baron Beresford , of Beresford in the County of Cavan on November 4, 1720 . He had also inherited the title of 4th Baronet , of Coleraine in the County of Londonderry, from his father in 1701 . His son George Beresford, 2nd Earl of Tyrone , was also raised to Marquess of Waterford on August 19, 1789 . Since then, the respective marquess has been using the title Earl of Tyrone as a subordinate title. The eldest son of the respective marquess carries the courtesy title Earl of Tyrone as a probable title heir ( Heir Apparent ) .
