Baron Beresford

Baron Beresford is a hereditary British title of nobility conferred once in the Peerage of Ireland and twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

In the first bestowal on November 4, 1720 in the Peerage of Ireland the title Baron Beresford , of Beresford in the County of Cavan , was created for Sir Marcus Beresford, 4th Baronet . At the same time he was given the title Viscount of Tyrone . His father had left him in 1701 the title of Baronet , of Coleraine in the County of Londonderry , created in 1665 in the Baronetage of Ireland. In 1746 he was promoted to Earl of Tyrone . His son, the 2nd Earl, was raised to Baron Tyrone in 1786 and Marquess of Waterford in 1789 . The barony is to this day a minor title of the marquess.

In the second bestowal on May 3, 1814 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the title Baron Beresford , of Albuera and Dungarvan in the County of Waterford , was created for General William Carr Beresford . In 1823 he was also raised to Viscount Beresford , of Beresford in the County of Stafford . In 1811 and 1812 he was awarded the Portuguese titles Conde de Trancoso and Marquês de Campo Maior . His titles expired on his death in 1856.

In the third award, the title Baron Beresford , of Metemmeh and Curraghmore in the County of Waterford, was created for Admiral Lord Charles William Beresford on January 28, 1916 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The title expired on his death in 1919.
