Baron Castlemaine
Baron Castlemaine , of Moydrum in the County of Westmeath , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
The family seat of the barons was Moydrum Castle near Athlone in County Westmeath.
Award
The title was created on December 24, 1812 for the Constable and Governor of Athlone, William Handcock . Since he had no children, the award was made with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, the title could also be passed on to his brother, Richard Handcock, and his male descendants. On January 12, 1822, he was also raised to Viscount Castlemaine , also in the Peerage of Ireland , this time without any special inheritance regulation.
With his death in 1839 the Viscountcy expired accordingly, the barony fell to his brother as 2nd baron. Today's title holder has been his great-great-great-grandson Roland Handcock as the 8th Baron since 1973 .
