Viscount Castlemaine , of Castlemaine in the County of Kerry , was a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was first created on April 24, 1718 for British MP Sir Richard Child, 3rd Baronet . Along with the Viscount title he was given the subordinate title Baron Newtown , of Newtown in the County of Donegal . Already in 1704 he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Wanstead in the County of Essex , from his older brother, which had been bestowed on his father on July 16, 1678 in the Baronetage of England . On June 11, 1731 he was also elevated to Earl Tylney . After the Earl inherited the family estates of his wife's mother in 1734, he adopted her family name "Tylney" by parliamentary law of March 24, 1734. All four titles lapsed on the childless death of his son, the 2nd Earl, on December 17, 1784.

The second bestowal of the title was created on January 12, 1822 for William Handcock, 1st Baron Castlemaine . This had already been raised on December 24, 1812 in the Peerage of Ireland to Baron Castlemaine , of Moydrum in the County of Westmeath . When he died childless on January 7, 1839, the Viscount title expired, while the barony fell to his brother due to a special inheritance regulation.
