Moydrum Castle ( Irish Caisleán Mhaigh Droma ) is the ruin of a castle near Athlone in County Westmeath , Ireland .

history

Moydrum Castle was built in 1814 by William Handcock, 1st Baron Castlemaine . It was destroyed by fire in 1921 during the Irish War of Independence .

U2 cover

Anton Corbijn photographed Moydrum Castle in 1984 for the cover of Irish rock band U2's fourth studio album The Unforgettable Fire . Due to the great resemblance to a picture by Simon Marsden , the band had to pay compensation.
