Sir Simon Neville Llewelyn Marsden, 4th Baronet (born  December 1, 1948 in Lincoln, Great Britain , † January 22, 2012 ) was a British photographer and author . Marsden was best known for his unusual black and white photos of "eerie" motifs.

life and work

Marsden attended Ampleforth College in Yorkshire and the Sorbonne in Paris . Subsequently, from 1969 to 1971, he worked as a professional photographer; his first work was published in specialist journals in the early 1970s. Two grants from the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1975 and 1976 enabled Marsden to travel extensively through Europe , the Middle East and the United States , where he photographed the diverse landscapes and numerous buildings.

Marsden's special interest has always been in "eerie" motifs such as cemeteries, ruins of old walls and the legends and haunted stories often associated with the depicted locations . The gloomy mood of his photographs is not based solely on the careful selection of motifs, but also on Marsden's photographic technology , which includes the use of infrared film .

Marsden's photographs are now world famous and can be found at numerous exhibitions in numerous museums, including the J. Paul Getty Museum in California , the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London . Marsden published numerous illustrated books and took on a number of commissioned works. The latter were used, for example, for the cover design for the album “Dusk And Her Embrace” by the English dark metal band “ Cradle of Filth ” and for the design of a newspaper advertisement for the Japanese electronics company Toshiba .

In 1997 he inherited the nobility title Baronet , of Grimsby in the County of Lincoln, created in 1924 from his older brother .

Marsden lived in an old rectory in Lincolnshire , England with his wife and family . He died unexpectedly on January 22, 2012. His title of nobility was inherited by his son Tadgh Orlando Denton Marsden (* 1990).
