Earl of Limerick is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

The title was first created for William Dongan on January 2, 1686 . Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Dungan , of Clane in the County of Kildare . The award was made with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants, both titles could also be passed on to his brothers. In the same year he inherited from his older brother Walter the title of 4th Baronet, of Castletown in the County of Kildare, which had been created on October 23, 1623 in the Baronetage of Ireland for an ancestor. The 1st Earl's only son, Walter Dungan, Viscount Dungan, died in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 , so that William's brother Thomas Dongan, the former governor of New York, inherited the titles. All three titles expired on his childless death on December 14, 1715.

In the second award, the title was recreated on January 22, 1803 for Edmund Pery, 1st Viscount Limerick . In 1794 he had inherited the title of 2nd Baron Glentworth , of Mallow, which had been bestowed on his father, William Cecil Pery, Bishop of Limerick, on June 2, 1790. On December 29, 1800 he had already been awarded the title Viscount Limerick , of the City of Limerick. On 11 August 1815 he was also the title of Baron Foxford , of Stackpole Court in the County of Clare , loaned, in contrast to the aforementioned Irish titles for the Peerage of the United Kingdom was one and a seat in the British House of Lords was associated . The title heir usually leads the invented courtesy title Viscount Glentworth . Today's title holder is his descendant Edmund Pery as 7th Earl of Limerick.
