Baron Rossmore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Rossmore , of Monaghan in the County of Monaghan , is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Ireland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The name gives the family seat of the barons, Rossmore Park near Monaghan in County Monaghan in Ireland .

Awards

For the first time on October 19, 1796 in the Peerage of Ireland the title was bestowed on the general and politician Robert Cuninghame . He had previously been Commander in Chief of British troops in Ireland. Since Cunighame had no children, the title was linked to a special inheritance regulation that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, considered the two sons of his wife's sister, Elizabeth, Warner William Westenra and Henry Westenra (* 1770).

Warner William Westenra accordingly inherited the title of 2nd Baron in 1801. He served for many years as Lord Lieutenant of Monaghan County. He was awarded the title a second time on July 7, 1838, this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In contrast to his Irish title from 1796, this was linked to a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords until 1999 .

Today's title holder has been his great-great-grandson William Westenra as the 7th and 6th Baron since 1958 .
