John George Dodson, 1st Baron Monk Bretton

John George Dodson, 1st Baron Monk Bretton , PC (* 18th October 1825 ; † 25. May 1897 ) was a British politician of the Liberal Party , the 1857-1884 Member of Parliament ( House of Commons ) was and, among others, 1882-1884 Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ( Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ) held. In 1884 he became a peer collected and belonged until his death in the upper house ( House of Lords ) as a member.

Life

Dodson, son of the House of Commons and Judge John Dodson and his wife Frances Priscilla Pearson, attended the prestigious Eton College and then graduated from Christ Church at the University of Oxford . On March 27, 1857, he was elected for the first time for the Liberal Party as a member of the House of Commons and initially represented the constituency of Sussex Eastern until January 31, 1874 . During this time he acted between February 1865 and April 1872 as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons and in personal union as Chairman of the Committees of the House of Commons (Chair of Committees of Whole House) and as Chairman of the Committee on Pathways and Means (Chairman of Ways and Means) . In 1872 he became a member of the Secret Privy Council ( Privy Council ) and served 1873-1874 as Financial Secretary of the Treasury (Financial Secretary to the Treasury) .

On January 31, 1874, Dodson was re-elected to the House of Commons for the Liberal Party and represented the constituency of Chester until May 8, 1880 , before he last between July 31, 1880 and November 4, 1884, the Scarborough constituency as an MP represented in the House of Commons. In the second government of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone he served between May 3, 1880 and December 28, 1882 as Minister of Local Government (President of the Local Government Board) and then from December 28, 1882 to October 29, 1884 as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ( Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ) .

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, Dodson was raised to the hereditary nobility of the Peerage of the United Kingdom on November 4, 1884 as Baron Monk Bretton , of Conybro and Hurstpierpoint in the County of Sussex, and thereby became a member of the House of Lords.

His marriage to Florence Campion on January 3, 1856 resulted in three daughters and one son. His only son, John William Dodson, was a diplomat and inherited the title of 2nd Baron Monk Bretton after his death on May 25, 1897. His three daughters Florence Harriet Dodson, Ethel Millicent Dodson and Mildred Augusta Dodson all died unmarried.
