history

Forecourt of the São João Bosco Church

At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp in Laga for East Timorese who were supposed to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

Laga is considered to be the home of many members of the paramilitary Konseilu Revolusionariu Maupe (KRM, German  Revolutionary Council Maupe ). Several incidents with the KRM occurred here. In November 2013, KRM members violated the general ban on civilians wearing military uniforms during a march on the Laga football field. On March 3, the KRM was declared illegal. On March 10, KRM members erected a blockade on the road to Baucau . One person was injured by an explosive device that was thrown. The KRM leadership surrendered to the authorities on March 14, but was released in December 2014. In January 2015, the KRM took two police officers hostage in Laga and wounded two others. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão personally drove to Laga in a convoy and negotiated the release of the hostages. Mauk Moruk fled with his people into the jungle.
