Alto Garças , officially Município de Alto Garças , is a municipality ( município ) in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso with around 9500 inhabitants on an area of ​​3672 km. The distance to the state capital Cuiabá is around 350 km. In 1933 Alto Garças only became a district of the municipality of Santa Rita do Araguaia and was separated as an independent municipality on December 10, 1953. Alto Garças is part of the Alto Araguaia microregion .

The area began to be settled in the early 20th century by adventurers in search of gemstones and other natural treasures. These days, the economy is dominated by precious stone mines - primarily diamonds - and agriculture - here primarily soy, cotton and grass for cattle feed.
