Alto Garças , officially Município de Alto Garças , is a municipality ( município ) in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso with around 9500 inhabitants on an area of 3672 km. The distance to the state capital Cuiabá is around 350 km. In 1933 Alto Garças only became a district of the municipality of Santa Rita do Araguaia and was separated as an independent municipality on December 10, 1953. Alto Garças is part of the Alto Araguaia microregion .
The area began to be settled in the early 20th century by adventurers in search of gemstones and other natural treasures. These days, the economy is dominated by precious stone mines - primarily diamonds - and agriculture - here primarily soy, cotton and grass for cattle feed.
The climate is humid and tropical with June, July and August being the dry months. Rainfall peaks in December and the total annual amount averages 1950 mm. The annual average temperature is 22 ° C. The extreme temperatures measured so far were 38 ° C and 0 ° C.
Alto Garças has beautiful rivers and waterfalls to offer for tourism. Larger agricultural farms invite you to linger. The calendar is determined by the carnival, which is held here as Garçafolia , and the Marian festival in honor of Nossa Senhora de Aparecida on October 12th.
The singer Vanessa da Mata (* 1976), born in Alto Garças, has gained international fame .
