Barra do Garças , officially Portuguese Município de Barra do Garças , is a political municipality in the midwest in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso on the border with Goiás . It is located west of the Brazilian capital Brasília and east of the capital Cuiabá .
The city is located northwest of the confluence of the Rio Garças in the Rio Araguaia , where the flow conditions form sandbanks , which is also reflected in the city's name, in English sandbank of the herons . The city, along with Aragarças and Pontal do Araguaia, is a popular tourist destination, especially during the dry season from June to August, when the low water levels of the two rivers reveal large sandy beaches and banks. There is then a wide range of water sports. The city's thermal springs are also known . The surrounding mountains with their waterfalls and bizarre rock formations are a popular destination for hiking / climbing ecotourists .
