Barão de Melgaço , officially Portuguese Município de Barão de Melgaço , is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso on the Rio Cuiabá . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 8,564 inhabitants, who live in a large community area of around 11,427.7 km² and are called melgacianos or melgacences . The population density is 0.7 inhabitants per km². The city of Barão de Melgaço is 102 km from the capital, Cuiabá .
The place is important as the entrance to the Pantanal , which is known here as Pantanal do Barão de Melgaço .

Surrounding communities are Santo Antônio de Leverger , Itiquira , Nossa Senhora do Livramento , Poconé and Corumbá in Mato Grosso do Sul .
climate
The community has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 26.0 ° C. The average rainfall is 1305 mm per year. In the southern summer, Barão de Melgaço has significantly higher rainfall than in the southern winter.
history
The place is named after the admiral Augusto Leverger , who had fortifications built on the Rio Cuiabá on the occasion of the Triple Alliance War , which are named as Fortificações de Melgaço and registered as cultural heritage. Leverger received the title of Baron von Melgaço.
The small town of Vila de Melgaço was renamed Chacororé from 1943 to 1948 and received self-administration rights as a municipality on December 12, 1953 with the spin-off from Santo Antônio de Leverger, but only effective on March 13, 1954. The municipality is responsible for a comparable area the size of Upper Austria .
