history

A military expedition under Antônio Peixoto de Azevedo explored the north of the Mato Grasso in 1819 in search of new river routes. On the road from Cuiabá to Santarém , which was built in 1970, several villages emerged in the mid-1970s. The area was hit by a gold rush in 1978. The street village of Peixoto de Azevedo became a barrack town.

In 1985 Peixoto had 100,000 inhabitants, had a gold turnover of one and a half tons per month and 136 gold sellers. Violence and murders were the order of the day. A year later, Peixoto was declared a separate community. Economic liberalization and high oil prices made the prospecting profitable in 1992. Thousands of Garimpeiros looted and left the city.

When hundreds of families settled in Peixoto in 1993, a second street village was created that lives from cattle breeding, logging, coffee, beans and corn cultivation.
