Rondonópolis , officially Município de Rondonópolis , is a city in the south of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso with 195,476 inhabitants (2010 census). As of July 1, 2018, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) estimated the population at 228,857 residents, who are called Rondonopolitans ( rondonopolitanos ). Due to the very large area of ​​the municipality, the population density is calculated at 47 inhabitants per km².

Rondonópolis is the economic and supply center and administrative seat of the Southeast Mato Grosso region and has been the seat of the Rondonópolis-Guiratinga diocese since 1959 . The distance to the capital Cuiabá is 227 km.

Rondonópolis was founded on the banks of the Rio Vermelho , a tributary of the Rio São Lourenço . The city center is at an altitude of 227 m. In 2010 the municipal area extended over 4159.118 km², in 2018 4686.622 km² were announced. The urban area of ​​the place itself is 38.7 km².

Rondonópolis is located in the highlands of Mato Grosso (Planalto do Mato Grosso) in the transition from the humid savannah (Campos cerrados) to the tropical rainforest . The extensive swamps of the Pantanal connect to the southwest . The floor is partly covered with Terra Roxa Estruturada .

history

On August 10, 1915, a settlement was established on the Rio Vermelho by decree. The settlement, the core of the future city, was named in 1918 after the Brazilian pioneer and later Marshal Cândido Rondon . Rondonópilis received city rights as a self-governing municipality on December 10, 1953.

Since the 1940s, Rondonópolis has been growing steadily through immigration from the other states in the mid-west of Brazil.

City administration

City prefect (head of the executive ) for the term 2013 to 2016 was Percival Muniz of the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS) after the local elections in Brazil in 2012 . Agriculture

The main crops of the agricultural area in the north are rice and cotton . Also, oil palms are common. Agriculture has been relying more and more on soy since the 1980s . Rondonópolis has since developed into a center of the soy processing industry. Particularly large parceled out fields are to be found southwest of the city.

State roads BR-163 and BR-364 meet in the center and connect the federal capital Brasília with the capitals Cuiabá in the north and Campo Grande ( Mato Grosso do Sul ) in the south.
