The Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE, Portuguese for: Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics ), based in Rio de Janeiro , has been Brazil's national geodata and statistics authority since 1934 . It is under the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management , among others for the ten-year rhythm held census responsible.
history
Statistical surveys at the time of the Empire of Brazil only took place in a few years, but at the time of the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas these were particularly important for the development of the country with its demographically and economically completely different states. After the revolution of 1930 a new concept was envisaged, for which the mathematician and statistician Mário Augusto Teixeira de Freitas laid the foundations. The IBGE was founded in three phases: the decree of July 6, 1934, the decree of May 29, 1936 for the then so-called Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) and since the integration of the Conselho Brasileiro de Geografia (CBG) by decree no. 1.527 (1937) as Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística the newly created institute. The institute is not an authority itself, it is a foundation under public law, but has the same function as e.g. B. a federal statistics office. As a functioning institution, it only presented results years later. The first president was Djalma Polli Coelho from 1951 to 1952 , the first female president was Wasmália Bivar , today's (as of 2020) for the 2019 to 2020 term of office is Susana Cordeiro Guerra . The institute currently has a staff of a little more than 10,000 and, in addition to its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, is represented in all Brazilian states.
Five large regions were created as statistical-geographical own creations, without regional authority impact, within these for internal use from 1989 to 2017 the mesoregions ( Portuguese mesorregião ) and within these again the microregions (Portuguese microrregião ). After around 28 years of practical experience, the IBGE has made new structures and streamlines with new names: Regiões Geográficas Intermediárias , indirect geographical regions, which will replace the mesoregions from 2017, and the Regiões geográficas imediatas , immediate geographical regions. The 5570 Munizips, that is the cities with their municipal area, can in turn form interest groups in the form of municipal associations within these regions, depending on the purpose for which the IBGE supplies the statistical planning data.
The 2020 rotating census has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil .
Provision of the data
In addition to the databases available online, the IBGE has drawn groundbreaking publications, especially in the early days, including the Enciclopédia dos Municípios Brasileiros , a lot of data from the initial first evaluations of censuses to consolidated numbers were made available on FTP servers, today (as of 2017 ) the IBGE offers its data on two user interfaces, the Panorama and the Perfil as an older version.
