Mário Augusto Teixeira de Freitas (born March 31, 1890 in São Francisco do Conde in Bahia Recôncavo , † February 22, 1956 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian statistician .

Life

Mário Augusto Teixeira de Freitas was a great-grandson of Augusto Teixeira de Freitas . From 1908 he was employed in the General Directorate for Statistics in the Ministry of Agriculture, Transport and Public Works and graduated in 1911 with a degree in law and social science at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro .

In 1920 he was commissioned with the census in Minas Gerais . He headed the statistical office in the state of Minas Gerais and published a statistical and a demographic yearbook and in 1926 the Atlas Corográfico Municipal de Minas Gerais (City Map Collection of the Municipios of Minas Gerais).

In 1930 Getúlio Vargas entrusted him with the management of the statistics department in the Ministry of Education and developed a concept for the collection and analysis of statistical data in Brazil, which resulted in the 1934 decree establishing the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística , the IBGE.

In 1958, the community of São José de Itanhém was renamed Teixeira de Freitas after him .
