Rubenis drew international attention for the first time by winning the 1998 Junior World Championships. In the same year he started at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and finished in 14th place. In his first season in the Luge World Cup 1999/2000 he was 18th overall. At the 2000 World Championships in St. Moritz , Switzerland , he finished 11th in the singles and, together with Iluta Gaile , Roberts Suharevs and Dainis Leksis, reached tenth place in the mixed team competition. A year later in Calgary he was only 29th. In the World Cup, he did not get past 25th overall. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Rubenis fell in the singles and was not included in the ranking. In the World Cup he was able to improve his performance significantly. At the 2003 World Championships on his home track in Sigulda , he won the silver medal in the single-seater and together with Anna Orlova , Zigmars Berkolds and Sandris Berzins in the mixed team. However, he finished the 2002/03 season only in 34th place overall. This subsequently remained his weakest ranking. The following year he turned 18.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Rubenis surprisingly won the bronze medal behind Armin Zöggeler and Albert Demtschenko . With this he won the first Olympic medal for sovereign Latvia . He was also successful in the World Cup in the 2005/06 season and was 11th overall. After these successes, he was voted Latvia's Sportsman of the Year . The following season 2006/07 was the most successful season of his career with sixth place in the overall standings for Rubenis. At the 2007 World Championships in Innsbruck he was seventh in the single-seater. In the mixed team, he finished sixth with his teammates.

A year later he won the title with the mixed team at the 2008 European Championships in Cesana . The team repeated this success at the 2010 European Championships in Sigulda. At the 2011 World Championships in Cesana, Rubenis was eleventh in the single-seater. In Altenberg 2012 and Whistler 2013 he reached places 19 and 12. In the winters 2012/13 and 2013/14 he again achieved two top 20 positions in the overall World Cup with places 14 and 13.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Rubenis won his second Olympic bronze medal together with Elīza Tīruma and the two-seater Andris and Juris Šics in the mixed team. After the end of the 2013/14 season, he ended his active career.
