PowerCell AB is a Swedish company based in Gothenburg that develops and manufactures fuel cells .

PowerCell was founded in 2008 as a spin-off from Volvo . The company develops and produces fuel cell stacks and fuel cell systems in the power range between 1 kilowatt and several megawatts . These are used in the commercial vehicle and automotive sectors , in shipping and in the stationary sector. The market capitalization at the end of 2018 was SEK 1.825 billion . PowerCell is listed on the Nasdaq First North index. In November 2019, PowerCell announced that the German automotive supplier Bosch holds a good 11 percent stake in the company.

Cooperations

Together with the Norwegian company Nel ASA and the Norwegian Hexagon Composite, PowerCell founded the Hyon joint venture in September 2017 , which aims to establish fuel cell-powered vehicles, especially in the maritime sector. In 2018, the development of fuel cell-based energy systems for ships was agreed with the German technology group Siemens . From 2021, the first of four hydrogen-powered ferries from the Norwegian Havyard Group is scheduled to run. PowerCell is developing a fuel cell system for ship propulsion with an electrical output of 3.2 MW per ferry. The delivery of a fuel cell system for test purposes was agreed with the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri in 2020. Together with Bosch , PowerCell plans to start series production of fuel cells for commercial vehicles and passenger cars from 2022. From 2022, the fuel cells produced by Bosch under license from PowerCell are to be used in the Nikola Motors trucks . In addition to the German Aerospace Center , the German automotive supplier Brose and other consortium partners, PowerCell is involved in the EU research project INN-Balance. As part of this project, more reliable, more efficient and cheaper fuel cell systems for vehicles are to be developed.
