The Nikola Motor Company , and Nikola engine called, is an American hybrid truck development or design company. It was in Salt Lake City ( Utah founded) in 2014 and has since 2018 based in Phoenix (Arizona) .

history

The Nikola Motor Company was founded in 2014 by Trevor Milton ( CEO ), who still holds over 40% of the shares in the company. Together with the Norwegian company Nel Hydrogen , Nikola Motors is planning to set up a network of hydrogen filling stations in the USA. Nel announced a $ 5 million investment in Nikola in September 2018. With an order for 800 trucks, the brewery group Anheuser-Busch , to which the Budweiser brand belongs, is one of Nikola’s first major customers. A total of more than 14,000 pre-orders for the company's trucks should be available (as of September 2019). Orders for the badger have been possible since June 29, 2020. In September 2019 it was announced that CNH Industrial had a stake of 250 million US dollars, as well as the German automotive supplier Bosch and the South Korean Hanwha Group each with over 100 million US dollars in Nikola Motors. CNH also supplies drive components for the construction of the tractor units. From 2022, Bosch plans to supply fuel cells for Nikola Motors vehicles that are manufactured under license from PowerCell . Other shareholders are the investment company ValueAct Capital from San Francisco and Worthington Industries from Columbus (Ohio) .

On March 4, 2020, Nikola announced that the company would merge with VectoIQ to become a public company by the second half of 2020. The business combination was approved by VectoIQ shareholders on June 2, 2020.

As of June 4, 2020, the combined company's shares will trade on the Nasdaq under the new ticker symbol “NKLA” (NYSE: NKLA). The proceeds from the merger and the subsequent IPO will accelerate production. In addition, Nikola will lay the foundation stone for its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Coolidge , Arizona , and continue expanding its hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Due to its high market value , the company is now traded as the second Tesla .

Models

Nikola Zero

The Nikola Zero was a buggy-like prototype of a so-called utility task vehicle, with a battery with 72 or 107  kWh .

Nikola One

The Nikola One was presented on December 1st, 2016. It is an electric truck with a large hydrogen tank behind the driver's cab and a fuel cell . The electrical energy generated in this way then charges the battery while driving the truck, and according to the CEO of Nikola Motor Company, Trevor Milton, the range of the truck is around 1,930 km (approx. 1,200 miles). The battery has a capacity of 320 kWh and supplies four electric motors with an output of 745 kW (2,000 hp).

Nikola Two

The Nikola Two is another announced model from Nikola that is said to be very similar to the Nikola One from a technical point of view. The main difference to the One is that the Nikola Two is equipped with a significantly smaller cab.

Nikola Tre

In November 2018 the Nikola Tre (Norwegian for "three") was announced. This electric truck is designed, among other things, for the European market and is expected to be produced from 2021. According to Nikola, the range of the tractor is between 600 and 1,200 kilometers. From 2021, the Nikola Tre will be produced in a purely battery-electric version by the joint venture consisting of Nikola and CNH Industrial, the parent company of the Iveco brand at the Ulm location . The hydrogen-powered version is also to be tested from 2021 and delivered from 2023.

Nikola Badger

In February 2020 the pick-up Nikola Badger (English for badger ) was announced. This should be equipped with a battery capacity of 160 kWh and a fuel cell with 120 kW electrical power. With this overall system, a range of over 900 km should be possible. Furthermore, the car is suitable for pulling heavy trailer loads over longer distances, as well as for supplying external consumers with up to 15 kW for 12 hours via a socket on the vehicle. The car is to be manufactured in cooperation with an automobile manufacturer.
