Steven Arthur Dann (born December 27, 1953 in Burnaby ) is a Canadian violist.

Then took violin lessons before switching to the viola at the age of sixteen. From 1969 to 1973 he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra . In 1972 he took lessons from Lorand Fenyves in Toronto and the following year from Robert Pikler in Sydney. From 1973 to 1977 he studied at the University of Toronto with Fenyves, he also took lessons with Bruno Giuranna . He was then first violist in the National Arts Center Orchestra (1977–80), Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich (1981–82), Concertgebouw Orchestra (1981–84) and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and from 1988 in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra .

As a guest he has played with the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival, the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle , the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Paavo Berglund and Pierre Boulez and the Canadian Opera Company . As a soloist he has appeared under the conductors Andrew Davis , Rudolf Barschai , Jiří Bělohlávek , John Eliot Gardiner , Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Wladimir Aschkenasi . He played the world premiere of Alexina Louie's Winter Music for viola and chamber ensemble, John Throwers Through Time and Space for solo viola, R. Murray Schafers Rounds and Walter Buczynski's Lyric VII for viola and orchestra. He has commissioned compositions from Peter Lieberson , Frederick Schipitsky , Christos Hatzis and Michael Oesterle, among others .

As a chamber musician, Dann worked with the Allegri, Bartók, Hungarian, Orford and Végh string quartets. Since 1990 he has been a member of the Smithsonian Chamber Players in Washington. He is a founding member of the Axelrod String Quartet and forms the Zebra Trio with Ernst Kovacic and Anssi Karttunen . He was twice nominated for a Grammy with the ARC Ensemble in Toronto .
